The process
How a medical negligence claim works in Ireland
A medical negligence enquiry follows a clear path. You get in touch, we carry out an initial review, we advise you on your options and any time limits, and we prepare a claim only if that is the right step for you. There is no obligation at any stage.
Simple and clear
Four simple steps
A straightforward path from your first question to clear advice on where you stand.
- 1
Get in touch
Tell us briefly what happened, by the enquiry form or by phone. There is no obligation.
- 2
Initial review
We listen, ask a few questions and look at the key facts and any records you have.
- 3
Advice on next steps
We explain your options clearly, including any time limits that may apply to you.
- 4
Claim preparation, if appropriate
If there may be a claim, we guide you through what comes next at a pace that suits you.
Time limits
There are time limits for bringing a medical negligence claim in Ireland. As a general rule, a claim must be brought within two years of the date you knew, or ought reasonably to have known, about the issue. Different rules apply for children and for some other situations. Because these limits can be complex and missing them can affect your options, it is sensible to ask early.
How costs work
We will explain costs clearly before you commit to anything, so there are no surprises. You will know what to expect at each stage.
In contentious business, a solicitor may not calculate fees or other charges as a percentage or proportion of any award or settlement.
Helpful to have
An evidence checklist
None of this is essential before you get in touch. It simply helps us give you clearer guidance sooner. Do not worry if you do not have these yet, we can help you gather them.
- A rough timeline of what happened and when
- The names of any hospitals, clinics or practitioners involved
- Any letters, reports or discharge summaries you have
- Your GP records, if you can access them
- Notes on how the issue has affected you day to day
